ICMS Event Management Students Win Best Community Event
A team of ICMS Event Management students are part of a group that have won Best Community Event of 2009 in the annual Australia Day Awards for the fashion parade benefit they organised on behalf of the charity Audrey's Wish. The event was one of the most successful run at ICMS with over 360 guests attending the gala fundraiser with raised almost $100,000 AU.

The event was part of a series of events that ICMS students organise as a compulsory hands-on component of their Bachelor's degree.

ICMS event management student, Anna Sierzchula said that the fundraiser was not only an opportunity to make a real difference in the life of a local family but also gave her invaluable event management experience. "I learned a lot about communication and just how vitally important it is as well as about leadership and how different people respond to different leadership styles".

♦ NSI Wins Award for Indigenous Cultural Tourism Programme
Northern Sydney Institute (NSI) has won a Training Initiative Award for developing a leading edge program to support the strategic direction of indigenous tourism in NSW.

The four day program created to develop cultural tourism in and around the National Parks provides the opportunity for cultural renewal and motivates participants to follow employment pathways which are provided as part of the programme.

Head Teacher, Lynn van der Wagen said, in many cases, the younger participants hear stories and learn a great deal about their culture. "At the end of the program it is common to have the wider community involved, including Elders and several children. Everyone sees the value of learning about culture and sharing it with others" she said.

The Indigenous Tourism Cultural Programme is now a finalist among other states and territories for the Australian Training Award.

Blue Mountains/AIHS Receive "Flying Colours" from AUQA for Industry Connections
The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) and its sister campus the Australian International Hotel School (AIHS) in Canberra, recently underwent a Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA) review as part of the national quality assurance scheme in higher education.

In an article sub-titled "Hospitality provider comes through its AUQA audit with flying colours", the Australian-based Campus Review noted that "alumni and current students are overwhelmingly positive about their education, staff are happy, and there are strong industry partnerships, a culture of continuous improvement and an extensive international network that offers huge potential for staff and student exchange, research activity and joint curriculum development via its inclusion in the Laureate network.

AUQA acknowledged the change process following the Laureate takeover is still being bedded down, it says there is the potential for substantial benefits from belonging to such a vast, quality, international education organistion. Laureate includes 45 universities in 20 countries offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees to 500,000 students, including several, such as the Glion Hotel School in Switzerland, specialising in tourism and hospitality. "The potential for BMIHMS in participating with the Laureate network is excellent, particularly with regards to the possibility of future study abroad options for students, for staff teaching exchanges and for undertaking review and planning activities such as benchmarking," the AUQA report stated.

The Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School (BMIHMS) and its sister campus the Australian International Hotel School (AIHS) are the two parts of a small, elite, internationally recognised provider of hospitality education, with just 407 students enrolled in its campus in Leura in the Blue Mountains and 141 in Canberra.
